Applied Marine and Watershed Science

Department Website

The M.S. in Applied Marine and Watershed Science (AMWS) is an innovative interdisciplinary program offering training in science and technology in the context of environmental policy.

We offer both Thesis and Professional Science Masters (PSM) degrees. The thesis option is a traditional M.S. degree that requires students to complete an original work of scholarship. The PSM option is primarily based in coursework and includes a 400-hour professional internship instead of an independent thesis to complete the course of study. With continuous full-time enrollment, PSM students can reasonably expect to graduate within two years. Thesis research may extend a student's graduation date beyond two years.

For both the Thesis and PSM degree options, students choose an emphasis in applied marine science or applied watershed science. The marine science emphasis focuses on hands-on, field-oriented learning in the areas of intertidal and subtidal ecology, marine landscape ecology, seafloor mapping, marine fishes, and coastal policy and management. The watershed and terrestrial science emphasis explores the applied science and management of land and water resources, including training in hydrology, geomorphology, watershed modeling, water quality monitoring, remote sensing, and ecology. The AMWS program emphasizes professional skill sets that distinguish students as they enter the workforce, including: advanced technologies for acquiring, analyzing, modeling and visualizing spatially explicit environmental data; professional and scientific communication; scientific ethics; and environmental economics and policy analysis.

The program accepts students from a wide range of related undergraduate majors. The application deadline is February 1st of each year. Please visit our admissions page for additional information.
