American Studies

Department Website

The Department of American Studies is committed to the interdisciplinary study of American culture and society as a whole. In addition to general courses in American life and thought, the program offers several areas of focus, including critical regionalism and Southwest studies; transnationalism, globalization, and colonialism; comparative cultural and popular culture studies; critical race and class studies; gender, sexuality and feminist studies; and environmental and social justice. Students consult with department faculty to develop individual, interdepartmental programs of study in the humanities and social sciences that focus on these or other significant aspects of American culture. Graduates of the program pursue academic careers as well as careers in public history, museums and archives, and the nonprofit and activist sectors. All required application materials must be submitted through the UNM online application process.
