Department Website

The Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Master of Science degree is a research-focused degree program requiring a thesis based on a significant research effort. Coursework provides a knowledge-base for careers in a wide range of areas within the atmospheric and environmental sciences. Research projects and cooperative education opportunities provide the framework for hands-on experience and real-world application of concepts discussed in class. Faculty expertise covers observations, analysis and forecasting of local-to-regional-scale weather; numerical simulation of weather and climate from storm-scale to regional-scale, observations and simulations of physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere, and surface-atmosphere exchanges; and the hydrology, ecology, and biogeochemistry of streams and watersheds. The Black Hills of South Dakota and surrounding plains provide a natural laboratory for local research in these areas, while faculty also are involved in national and international projects.
