This program prepares students for advanced research and teaching in Asian and comparative philosophy and in selected areas of Western philosophy. A solid background in Western philosophy - especially its historical development and basic current issues in at least one of the areas of ethics, epistemology, metaphysics and aesthetics - is required of all students. Faculty working primarily in Asian and comparative philosophy have expertise in Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Islamic and Buddhist traditions. The department draws upon over fifty years of innovative work.
