Asian Studies

Department Website manoa.hawaii.edu/asianstudies/

The MA in Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program for students who wish to deepen and broaden their understanding of the political, social, economic and cultural dynamism of Asia. Located in Hawai‘i, the crossroads of the Pacific, the UHM Asian Studies graduate program fosters an understanding of a variety of Asian perspectives and the creation of collaborative ties with Asian scholars. Students strengthen their language skills, acquire a critical view of transformations and interactions in Asia, and develop a focused research project on a particular theme or a region (China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, South Asia) with the goal of producing an original thesis or an MA portfolio. The program allows students the flexibility to tailor their course of study to their needs, and to benefit from the expertise of well over 200 Asia specialists on campus. Graduates of the program have gone on to successful careers in education, government service, library science, journalism and business across North America and Asia.
