The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at Portland State's Hatfield School of Government prepares students for public service careers with two degree tracks (one for pre-service students and an EMPA for those with more than ten years of significant work experience). The program offers specialties in nonprofit management, natural resources, state/regional/local government and global leadership, all of which are taught by faculty with significant practical experience. Half the faculty are formally connected with two affiliate Centers (Center for Public Service and the National Policy Consensus Center), which provide administrative support and funding for a variety of applied research activities for both students and faculty. More than one third of the faculty are actively engaged in research, leadership development and technical assistance in foreign countries, including: Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, the Middle East and Mexico. This on-the-ground experience is integrated into the classroom teaching and fuels the program's emphasis on global leadership.
