North Dakota State University

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Department Website

Located in modern facilities in the NDSU Research and Technology Park, the department bridges a gap between basic and applied research in the field of polymers and coatings science. Opportunities are provided for cross-disciplinary research, often accomplished by the multidisciplinary research activities; for example, with chemistry or engineering. Examples of advanced research projects are: colloidal and interfacial chemistry of polymers and coatings; nanoscale design of coatings; polymer synthesis; environmentally compliant coatings; adhesion; coating durability assessment; combinatorial materials synthesis and formulation; corrosion control by coatings; conductive polymers for corrosion protection; and anti-fouling coatings. Students may also enroll in the Materials Science and Nanotechnology Program and graduate with that degree, while working in the department. Programs are individually tailored to meet the needs of each student and graduate research stipends are nationally competitive.
