There are five fields of study offered for this degree: ancient world, early modern Europe, modern Europe, United States to 1877, and United States since 1877. Students must prepare themselves to be examined in both United States fields and in two of the three other fields. Although the program's emphasis is on teaching, each student must take a research seminar in either American or European history and submit a five-credit research paper that is related both to teaching and to the field of concentration.
