Communication (Documentary Studies)

Department Website nau.edu/SBS/Communication/Degrees-Programs/MA-Communication/Documentary-Studies-emphasis

The changing landscape of media and journalism requires individuals with documentary and electronic storytelling expertise. Media convergence has eliminated discrete categories of training and expertise once common in the industry. The M.A. in Communication with an emphasis in Documentary Studies will be of interest to media professionals seeking professional development, as well as documentarians who required additional training and instruction. There are no current documentary programs in the southwest, creating a void in a geographic area highly attractive to students and professional interested in documentary production. In addition to a general grounding in the field of Communication, the Documentary Studies emphasis involves documentary work across a spectrum of media, including audio, film, writing, photography, and multimedia. To stimulate and develop student creativity, the program blends documentary studies with production. The program is for professionals already working in visual communication, as well as incoming undergraduate students.
